Nightwear through the ages
Nightwear, especially women’s night clothes, has changed dramatically over the years. From the first Chemise to the flannel pajamas that we know so well today, the transformation of the night clothes over the years is astounding.
History of nightwear
The Chemise was probably the first night clothes worn by women in the early middle- ages. This medium length tunic had dual function, worn by many women as underwear.
The Negligees debuted in France in the 18th century and were not the beautiful feminine garments we know today but also served a practical purpose of keeping one warm in the winter.
Nightgowns evolved from the chemise. Made from light weight cotton in the summer and heavier flannels in the winter they became known as women’s night shirts.
It was not until the early 1950’s when women started wearing trousers more on the whole that women’s pajama’s came about. By the 1960’s women’s pajamas were outselling traditional cotton and flannel night gowns.
Contemporary nightwear
In this day and age you can really wear anything you like to bed; flannel or cotton gowns, matching two piece set, silk lingerie and so on.
Many prefer to keep a variety of night clothes for different occasions. For overnight stays we like something modest, for those romantic nights in we would like something feminine and for those bitterly cold nights we would prefer something cozy and snug to keep us warm.
