Abercrombie: How It All Started

Abercrombie is a very popular high-end fashion label specializing in a genre they call “Casual Luxury”. The brand has been the favorite of avid fashion lovers around the world nonetheless, especially since most of their collections are very comfortable and can make you look gorgeous for different occasions. However, not many of you may know the history of Abercrombie as a brand.

The brand Abercrombie was first founded in 1892 by David T. Abercrombie. The actual brand is Abercrombie & Fitch, and the company was specializing in sporting and excursion goods. Among the popular signature products of Abercrombie during this era is the famous luxury shotgun and tens.

In 1976, Abercrombie filed for bankruptcy and the company’s flagship store in Manhattan was closed. In early 1979, a company named Oshman’s Sporting Goods bought Abercrombie’s name and mailing list. The brand was then transformed into a mail-order business, and it was quite successful during the period. Three shops was established by the beginning of 1980s.

Abercrombie was then sold to The Limited who develops the business swiftly to a completely new level. The sale was made in the 1988, and Oshman’s Sporting Goods’ ownership and insurance policies are still considered active at the time. There were several interesting debates regarding this issue, but by the end of 1996 the company is running smoothly.

Abercrombie also released a kids’ version of its products known as the Abercrombie Kids or simply Abercrombie. The kids fashion line was first launched in 1998 and has been equally successful.
